How might we appear before God? As keepers of the flame or keepers of the lame? The three-personed God is the Source of all that is. Father breathed Himself into the as yet incomplete Adam and Adam became a living being. Not because he had air. But because He had spirit - the Spirit of our Father. We are truly alive when we are one with the Spirit of our Father. This is the flame of life - the life that originates in the trinity, in the person of God. This is the flame, the spirit of God that was breathed into us as sons and daughters of God.
‘Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being’ Gen 2.7 NIV. We are all notionally sons of God. We are sons in spirit and in truth when our life is Christ and we are living in our new covenant inheritance of union with God. To live from the law is to be a dead person walking. To life from the Spirit [of Christ] is to be ignited with spirit and life as a regenerated son of God.
‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life’ John 6.63 NIV. Two people can give a talk. One can be a talk. The other is spirit and life. The latter comes from the spirit of sonship. The person is a son in our Father. One in Spirit with Father he/she releases spirit and life. We can live a ‘Christian life’ in the flesh or we can live it as sons and daughters in spirit and life.
When Jesus taught He assured all that the flesh means nothing. This is to day that there is no flame/spirit of life in objects, human effort, rites of beliefs. The life that ignites existence is the Spirit of God.
This flame is the Spirit of our Father alive in us. In this Spirit we are one with God and one with the universe that came forth from God. Harmony, holiness and wholeness is union with God. This union is ours by creation and by redemption. Jesus draw all things together in Himself and we are one with God, one with our origins and our future because we are one with God. In Jesus we and Father are one.
‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfilment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ’ Eph 1.3-10 NIV. Jesus was the living representative of union with the Father. He spoke words of spirit and life because He was joined to spirit and life and was spirit and life. He came in the flesh and is now the life-giving Spirit. This is the flame of life that is the life of God manifest in you and expressed in you. There is only one living flame and this is it. When enveloped in the flame that is Christ our life we become life-giving spirits.
Everything has been settled by the cross, the resurrection of Jesus and Pentecost. Because of the at-one-ment wrought by God in Jesus, we are joined to God. His Spirit and our spirit is one. Paul states that we are one with God ‘by the One Spirit.’
‘But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him’ 1 Cor 6.17 NLT. Jesus was one with His Father. He came to reveal Father and give to us what He enjoyed: He and His Father being one. Only the Son knows the Father. Jesus reveals who Father is to each and every person who embraces Jesus as their life. God is love. Father is love in person. The nature of our Father - who He is as Himself and for us - is seen as we see Jesus and also revealed by Holy Spirit to everyone who makes Jesus their life.
There’s a curious fact that emerges among Believers. Being a living flame depends on not on knowledge but by being - by being alive in Christ because Jesus Himself is our life. There are Believers who live from religion and Believers who are alive in their spirit because Christ is their life. They are the burning bush as a compared to the dead shrub.
Should we live from the law we are as a charred log that no longer glows because the fire has gone out. When Christ is our life the Fire is in us and with us. We are imbued with that flame of living fire that is the presence of our Father intermingled in our being. We are the burning bush that Moses saw, incarnated with the Spirit of Christ.
‘For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory’ Col 3.3,4 NIV. This glory is the living flame of Christ’s Spirit in you now. The key fact of the new testament age is Christ in us and more - Christ our life. United with Father we live in the Spirit of Sonship. Because Christ is our life we share in the Spirit and Life that is Jesus, our Father and Holy Spirit. This is the ‘flame’ of life, the representation of which Moses saw in the desert. Incarnated daughters and sons. Dead bones in the desert that have been imbued with infinite and eternal life. When Christ is our life we are keepers of the flame. When the law is our life we are keepers of the lame.
The curse that we bring on ourselves is to undo the gospel of the Kingdom, revise the new covenant back to the old, revert from life in the spirit to life in the law and make the atonement null and void. We have put out the fire and castrated the life that could have welled up to everlasting life. We have become ghosts instead of the real men and women for whom Christ has come in our flesh. Paul warned of this in Galatians.
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! Gal 1.6-9 NIV.
We can be aflame of we can be keepers of the lame. Christ in you is the treasure of this age. In Him you have your identity, your unique mission and your authentic being as a son/daughter of God. You are alive in the living flame, rid of the curse and living in your inheritance as sons of God.
