There is a law that holds society together, a law that holds the word and the universe together. But it’s not the law of Moses, political correctness or a Christian perspective on morality and ethics. It is the person of Jesus the Son of God. Both Paul and John refer to this fact - John when He speaks of the logos/word and Paul when he declares in Colossians that all creation holds together in the Son.

There is no ‘law’ that is distinct from the person of God and never was. All that is, has found its being in Him.

The meaning and purpose of the universe and of human life is in the Son. The mystery of the plan made in the beginning that results in the new creation and then the culmination of righteousness and life is revealed in the person of Jesus. Then in those in whom He lives. We are the witness to the world, the manifest presence of God as His sons. We are His kingdom of life-giving priests filled with the Spirit and presence of the trinity, freely being ourselves, captured in the life of Christ, yet flourishing as the sons and daughters of God because He has come in our flesh.

This supernatural incarnation, the manifestation of the character and life of God in the church is possible and real because we live in the Spirit and not in the law. The law is a non- entity, an abstraction, mere words on stone - a modus operandi given to help the Jews live in some semblance of holiness - a shadow that pointed the reality of the Christ to come. Conceived as a failure it was never meant to last, yet to serve as lesson that we need more than words and precepts to achieve wholeness. We needed a life that was not ours
to become us in the most complete and absolute way. This is the law of the Spirit of Life who is Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit releasing their being into our person.

If our forbears new their Bibles, the significance of the cross and the implications of the new covenant for the Kingdom of God, they could never have accepted William Miller’s message or the other gospel of Ellen White and the pioneers. Instead the pioneers, my relatives included, roamed the countryside spreading this ‘other gospel’ that undid the accomplishments of God in Christ as though they were messengers of life and truth. Having a Sabbath as a pseudo-christ and an impressive ‘ system’ is not necessarily the Kingdom of God any more than a person’s shoes are them.

To stick to the law; to
make a thing out of the law when heaven has conspired to give us themselves as our life to overcome the alienation that un-suspecting immature Adam chose, is a great ignorance and a foolishness. To concoct this ‘other gospel’ based on the law and the Sabbath and then to live in wilful blindness to the new covenant that is Christ our life is at best deception and at worst a folly.

‘They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted-twice dead’ Jude 1.12 NIV.

If the law is our life then Christ is not. If the Sabbath is our rest then Jesus is not. When the law is our life the law has come in our flesh and the Spirit of Christ has not. If the Spirit of Christ has not come in our flesh and we are living in the law and not in the Spirit, we are perpetuating misery and paralysis in the name of God.

If we are attempting to re-create ourselves in Adam’s old creation, then we are not being transformed in Christ’s new creation. If we are alive to the law we are dead to the spirit of sonship, outside the fellowship of the sons of God and attempting to make a life and a ministry for ourselves in our self-made orphanage. If this is the truth then the Three Stooges are rocket scientists. But we have been delivered from the conceit of this Body of Death, thanks entirely to Christ. Yet we can contradict this in the name of ‘our perspective’ for the sake of an imagined identity and the false husband of the law. But in doing so we separate ourselves from life, deceive ourselves and hinder the Kingdom of life with a body of death.

‘I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist’ 2 John 1.7 NIV.

There is a Christ of God. But this christ is not the lesser law-subordinate christ of Desire of Ages. There is His gospel of the Kingdom. But it is not ‘the system.’ There is life in His name and no other. There is Christ our life and His person in us as spirit and life. None need be dead men walking. All can be alive as kings and priests because Christ Himself is their life.

‘And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe’ Heb 1.2 NIV.
