SABBATH

SABBATH2.001

Jesus declared Himself ‘I AM.’ One implication of this statement is that the universe exists in Him, finds its purpose in Him, realizes its destiny in Him and finds its rest in Him. This is the meaning of the word logos and John’s statement:

‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome
it’ John 1.1-4 NIV.

The darkness has not overcome it but the darkness tries hard. As a friend remarked in a Christian school staffroom, “Anything not Jesus is a waste of time.’ There is no rest, no life, no nurture in any substitute for the person of Jesus expressed in you, your family and society.

Genuine rest is found in the fullness of life. Jesus re-creates and transforms you and releases life in place of disease, decay, worrisome frustration, the struggle for identity and death. Anything dead when touched by Jesus is made alive. Christ lives in you and more. The God-head has made you their house. God is not to be striven for. He has come to you and is as close as your thoughts - yet more real than you are. Jesus rose from the dead. He is the living resurrection; the resurrection and the life in person. This is His power of new creation life. With Him as your life you are a life-giving spirit, a son and an agent of the new creation. Heaven on earth begins with you where you are!

Because Jesus is - you are. You have the grace and the spirit of Christ in you, to be yourself! You have peace, comfort and a spirit of boldness because Christ’s life is your life. You are delivered from the struggle to be. Since Christ is in you, you have the contentment and resources to be who you are and be fulfilled by living in your unique design.

It is important to rightly divide (interpret) the word of truth. This is done in the Lordship of Christ who is the Jesus Lens. There is no other legitimate lens.
We will never find life, truth or wholeness in the Ellen White/Adventist version of the Bible or in Adventism itself. Here Jesus is less than the Lord, less than God and, according to Dr Bacchiocchi, in need of help by carnal humanity! His statement is but a strand of this ‘other gospel’ of law focussed self-effort with Jesus help. He writes

‘How can we enable Christ to harmonize and quiet our restless lives? God gave mankind before and after the Fall a vital institution, the Sabbath day: a day specifically designed to free us from secular concerns so that we might freely find rest in God.’

But Jesus is our rest in God. The quote above reveals quite another gospel and a lesser christianity - or more to the point a version of Christianity robbed of the vicarious humanity of Jesus.
Rest is a person. Rest is Jesus Himself, our Sabbath, our peace and our new creation living. Thus the following passage above needs to be seen as the non-gospel that it is. This is a gospel of special pleading - a gospel of Adventism, a gospel that is peculiar because it is deviant. This passage reveals a confident ignorance of the gospel of the Kingdom.

‘The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons’ 1 Tim 4.1 NIV.

Clearly the writer hopes to receive from The Sabbath that which can be received only from Jesus without limit from the peace and rest that is Christ our life. The notion of Sabbath our life is a doctrine of demons concocted to denude Believers of Christ and disfigure the expression of Jesus in His people. The glory of this age is as simple as it is transforming. It is Christ in you, Christ come in your person, the trinity in you and making you their habitation. In the Holy Family and with them in you, you are one with God, one with yourself and with humanity. Because God has drawn you into Himself through Jesus and because He is your life - you are no longer a legalistic jitter-bug wondering if you have ‘done enough.’ You are in Him, in His grace and authorized to be yourself in His life. This is your Sabbath. In Him you are His rest!
