This post is called Two Horses because it arises from a parable the Lord gave a friend in a dream some years ago. My friend asked me to interpret her dream. A number of my friends and I had come into the Spirit as it is called. We came to experience and expect that it is normal for Jesus to speak to those who will hear; to speak by His Spirit into their soul, often through dreams, visions and what are called prophetic words given by people who walk with Jesus and have been baptized with Holy Spirit. ‘The churches’ as used below is not an abstraction. ‘The churches’ means people like you.

‘Whoever has ears,
let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches’ Rev 2.29 NIV.

Some find this difficult to accept and are the poorer for having adopted a version of deism and a ‘God helps those who help themselves’ outlook. But this is by the way. For myself I choose to be eschew this poverty mentality and live as a son of God rather than a pauper.

I have forgotten the details of the dream but not the chief motifs - Horses. One was a spirited stallion with rippling sinews, semi-obscured in the back room of the church. This meant Holy Spirit was hidden in the shadow of doctrine but not allowed to be part of the reality that is Christ. The other was a show-pony of small size, decked with ribbons and devoted to the things such hoses do at shows, trot in circles, go through gates, jump small obstacles and engage in the game called ‘show judging.’ We had a hackney type horse like this when we were kids. Barrel shaped in body and stubborn as a mule – a fitting symbol of ourselves when we live from the law rather than the Spirit.

The stallion on the other hand, was not for playing games. He was in the tradition of a stock horse with Spirit, or a race horse, or a wild brumby galloping at the head of a group of mares. This stallion was potent, controversial and useful in advancing the Kingdom. Not given to making life a game but releasing spirit and life.

Holy Spirit loves the role of revealing Jesus, His relevance to who we are as sons, the extravagance of His love for all and the completeness of His humanity and divinity for every person. It’s easy, should be belong to a narcissistic culture to refute assaults on our darkness with rationalizations and excuses. But if we do we will always remain gelding and never stallions. Some people invert any ray of light that comes to them in support of their pre-conceived notions and in doing so shrink from a gelding into a Shetland pony. By the end of their lives they are no longer a man but a mouse.

Holy Spirit will lead those who are willing out of the old covenant into the new and reveal to them the vicarious humanity of Jesus that means that in Jesus no matter what the issue - He is always more than enough. Holy Spirit, being one of the trinity is Spirit and truth. He undoes false doctrine, liberates from legalism and presents Jesus as who He is: Totally our life.

‘I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!’ Gal 1.6-9 NIV.

Holy Spirit lives to reveal our union with God and position in our Father. He will not suffer an abridged Jesus or a muffled Savior. He will dissolve false gospels, other gospels, and perversions of the gospel of the Kingdom because they dishonor Jesus, and cripple those for whom He lives. Other Gospels blind them to their unlimited potential in Christ. It may be said that Holy Spirit, with the help of angels and apostolic teachers pulls out tares and replaces them with sons of God.

‘The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one’ Matt 13.38 NIV.

Holy Spirit in company with Jesus unites to reveal Father and expose His glory, good nature and love towards us. He undoes false reports and slanders against Father that come from the Father of lies, our own fear and bad religious teaching. Holy Spirit lives to draw all into the rich inheritance Jesus has won for us - new life in union with God of the kind enjoyed by Jesus and His Father.

We can ignore this work of the Spirit. We can be inert to the Spirit of Sonship He wants to secure. We can be smug and blind in our little perspective that is a denial and distortion of the truth, even though we call it the truth. I have seen Holy Spirit withdraw when communities adhere to their elephant in the room - their erroneous assumptions and self-made identity. They snuggle into the comfort of their long-held veils rather than keep in step with the Spirit and His guidance. Not for them the wisdom and revelation that is Christ our life and the new creation realized in our flesh. But the bewitching comfort and the curse of long held fables.

Holy Spirit’s intention is for us to be the stallion and not the show pony. We are stallions in the Spirit of Sonship, never in the soulishness of law and religion. The show pony motif stands for the futility of religion, with its motions and obsession externalities that lack spirit and truth and which are forever incapable of being the new creation. Here we are captured in the game of religion instead of the potency of the Kingdom revealed in us. This is our show pony life in the old covenant, preoccupied with law and religion but lacking the potency to deliver self-control or the spirit and life of the sons of God. The show pony is the steed of the slave woman. But the stallion is the steed of the free woman galloping forth conquering and to conquer.
