The mirror into which the Godly woman and the Godly man looks to take their leading is not the law. It’s Jesus Christ. The issue that most affects your holiness is not your conformity to rules. It’s your union with God. The archetype of being alive, together and whole is not adherence to the law. It’s oneness with the triune God. The trinity is the issue of the ages. Not the law or the existence of Satan.


Thomas Torrance observes that, “The problem with our human personality is that it suffers from a deeply set schizoid condition which regularly, and indeed inevitably, gives rise to insincerity and hypocrisy in us. Through estrangement from the personalising source of our being, the image we present, and wish to present, to others has become detached from what we actually are, so that it becomes a deceptive mask.” (1)

This may not be something we have wickedly and deceptively entered into. It is usually the result of our attempt to be a person of significance. Although it can merge into wickedness when we try so hard to make a real self out of a false self that we habitually engage in the ‘gaslighting’ of others.


Nevertheless we can find ourselves contained in a lesser self than we are because we have become insulated from Christ through poor teaching, bad doctrine and aberrant gospels that while not estranging us from the Body of Christ, certainly make us a diseased member of that Body.


Dualism is a deception. The Schizoid condition that Torrance cites is the normal life lived in the bisected realm of the knowledge of good and evil. We can live this life as Christians if we have been unfortunate enough to have been socialised into a Christian version of the knowledge of good and evil, as Gregory Boyd observes.


Law based theologies are a perversion of the gospel and an affront to the Kingdom of God.

Holiness is oneness. The oneness of the triune God has become ours in Jesus Christ.

The incarnation is a holistic agency in which the externality of the law is replaced with the Christ woven into our being so that we become the expression of Christ. There is no dualism in Christ Jesus. His Kingdom arises from His Gospel which makes us one with God. One with God so that we are healed by His Presence and shaped into daughters and sons by His indwelling. The new and living way is that Christ becomes us: Theosis.

Transformation occurs because Christ really is our life. “The incarnational union was also an atoning union, in and through which our lost and damned humanity is redeemed, healed and sanctified in Jesus Christ. That means that the broken state of human personal being, resulting from the alienation of humanity from God and the conflict between them that became embedded within its very existence, is brought within the redeeming, healing and sanctifying activity of God in Jesus Christ.” (2)
