Adventist doctrine makes good headway among those who are concrete thinkers and poorly educated. And with educated folks those who have a vested interest in maintaining its validity on account of their own identity/ career or the need to maintain the prestige of those who preceded them. There is no real value to be had in pumping up a gospel that is just plain wrong. Nor is there wisdom in disseminating a gnostic gospel of special knowledge. But there is merit in setting captives free from ties that dull the human spirit and slander Christ.
Adventist doctrine appeals to the natural penchant of people to legalism with its concrete prescriptions of doing good and avoiding evil. Here it has the same appeal to the human mind as Islam has to the Muslim with a designated and defined ‘righteousness’ purporting to be the solution to the world’s chaos and woe. It is not chance that theologians who have supported grace that maintains the law came from a background of family chaos. If one’s father was an alcoholic a gospel of law might look like the solution to degradation and disorder. But it is not. Such religiosities are  a version of the knowledge of good and evil and a pollution of the Kingdom.
Jesus abolished the false narrative of a human -constructed attempts to be like God in the Person of Himself. He made humanity one with God by His atonement and imparts Himself to us by incarnation. Thus, we are graced with forgiveness and a living way of becoming Godly thigh Christ come in our flesh. Grace and holiness come to us by atonement and incarnation – in other words by Christ.
Thus, to make a thing out of Sabbath-keeping and to promote it as a key to Adventist identity is to advertise to all that we are ignorant of what Christ has achieved for us – Christ for us and as us or what Paul calls Christ who is our life. It is for this reason that some have questioned the Christianity of Adventists as Christians. While Adventists can insist that they belong to the Body of Christ they do not appreciate the fact that bodies can have tumours of dysfunctional flesh. Many Adventists know about grace – but it is a grace hijacked to the keeping of the law rather than a grace that is an unadulterated Christ our life by incarnation.
How can people be truly Christian when they ignore that Jesus replaced the adamic law/knowledge of good and evil with Himself as our life. Such belief leaves us in a pre-Christian state.
Steve Daily observes that, “
The Sabbath became the most important (marked by a halo) of the Ten Commandments, the “seal of God,” the “identifying mark” of the “remnant church,” and the centre of Adventist theology, all because of Ellen White’s visions. It is fascinating to me as a theologian to see that God would “elevate” an Old Covenant law in such a manner, when His word says that this law written in stone is now a “ministry of death” (2 Corinthians 3:7) and a “ministry of condemnation” (2 Corinthians 3:9).” This explains the woodenness of Adventist culture, the addiction to externalities, the sidelining of the incarnation and an attachment to a gospel that Paul calls ‘no gospel at all’.
Daily, commenting on some distinct doctrines validated by Ellen white’s supposed visions observes that, “
The great majority of churches reject the notion of soul sleep, that the dead have no living spirit and are in a fully unconscious state. But both Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses embrace this doctrine and trace its origins in their movements to George Storrs, an influential Millerite preacher.
Storrs was a former Methodist minister, and Miller himself did not support Storrs’s views about the dead, which included annihilationism—the teaching that the lost are annihilated rather than consigned to an eternal hell. But Ellen Harmon-White, Joseph Bates, James White, and Charles Taze Russell, the founder of Jehovah’s Witnesses, were all profoundly influenced by George Storrs’s doctrines.
They did not totally agree with him on everything ..But once again, it is Ellen White’s “visions” that promote the doctrines of soul sleep and annihilationism to an almost equal plane with the Sabbath.” Sadly for those who put their faith in the aberration that we know as Adventism, she had no such visions, which means her pronouncements did not come from God, the consequence of which is that this religion of negativity and legalism need oppress no one who appreciates life and truth more than the convenience of cunningly designed fables.
This version of the state of the dead has every relevance to the state of human life. It ignores that human beings have a spirit in spite of the fact that the Bible asserts that at death the spirit returns to God as in ‘Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it’ Eccl 12.7 NKJV. Adventists are fond of parroting off ‘the dead know not anything’ when in fact they do. As Jesus said to the thief on the cross, ‘Today you will be with Me in paradise.’
Bereft of any perception of their own spirit, Adventists have no such category to perceive speech that occurs in the Spirit, referring to such as ‘beautiful words’ or ‘words from the heart’. The woodenness of manner that is the typical Adventist at worship is a form of abuse that none need endure – not when Christ is our life by the Spirit come in our flesh.
